	Malcolm was first elected 13 December 1975. This followed a double dissolution of the Federal Parliament. Senators' terms were taken to have begun on 1 July 1975. From 1993 until his retirement he was a joint Father of the Senate with Brian Harradine. He was a Labor Senator from 1975 to 1996 and Senator for the 'Queensland First' Party from 1996 to 1999. He left the Senate in July 1999. Later on in his life he was known by the public as simply Mal Colston.
